55 RallyRACC: Hablan los protagonistas del podio 

El nuevo Campeón del Mundo FIA de Pilotos de Rallies, Ott Tänak (Kärla, Estonia, 15/10/1987), comenzó a competir muy joven (2001), incluso antes de cumplir la mayoría de edad, siendo campeón nacional de rallies en su país en 2008, año este en el que debutó en el mundial en Portugal con un Subaru Impreza STi N14. Esa misma temporada se ganó el derecho a participar en la Pirelli Star Driver, un certamen promocional de la FIA donde todos los pilotos competían con coches iguales, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, realizando así varias carreras en 2010.

En 2011 se estrenó con un Ford Fiesta RS WRC en el mundial de la mano de M-Sport, equipo y marca a la que estuvo ligado durante varias temporadas hasta que el año pasado firmaba por Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, terminando con el Yaris WRC como tercer clasificado en el mundial de Pilotos para, ya en la actual campaña, lograr el título con 6 victorias en las 13 pruebas celebradas hasta el momento.

El estonio ha participado en 105 rallies del WRC con 12 victorias absolutas, 10 con Toyota entre 2018 y 2019 y 2 con Ford en 2017, obteniendo la primera de ellas en Cerdeña. En todas le ha acompañado siempre como copiloto Martin Järveoja.

“En primer lugar me gustaría felicitar a nuestros dos nuevos Campeones del Mundo. Obviamente hemos estado peleando todo el año y Ott y Martin han sido muy fuertes, así que felicidades por su primer título. No será tan fácil para ellos el próximo año… Siempre estuve pendiente de los tiempos y la clasificación por si todavía había alguna opción en este último día. Si Dani [Sordo] hubiese terminado segundo, entonces el Power Stage sería la solución. Pero, al final, es lo que es. Hicimos lo máximo que pudimos y disfrutamos durante todo el rally con una sensación genial del coche. Esperamos con ansia la próxima prueba y poder luchar por el título de Constructores, pues ahora el objetivo es centrarse en ganarlo en Australia”.

“Desde el jueves, cada persona que me encontraba me preguntaba por la presión que tenía, qué pensaba y como estaba de cara al campeonato. No es fácil administrarlo en esta situación. Diría que en mi vida he tenido momentos difíciles, por lo que sin duda ello me ha ayudado a afrontarlo en este tipo de situaciones. Aún así, esto era algo nuevo para mí. Al principio no sabía cómo me comportaría y cómo lo manejaría. No había otra opción que relajarme y tratar de correr sin asumir riesgos. Hablé anoche con Markko Märtin y su consejo fue que asegurase los puntos y no presionase, por lo que obviamente no está contento con lo que hice en el Power Stage. Sabía que tenía dos opciones, pilotar y esperar a que Thierry [Neuville] no cogiera demasiados puntos, lo cual sabía que no iba a suceder, o atacar y sumar el máximo de puntos para intentar decidir el campeonato antes de Australia”.

“Perder el segundo lugar por 4 décimas de segundo no es bueno. Nos esforzamos mucho y disfrutamos, pensamos que habíamos atacado mucho, pero no fue suficiente. Estamos en el podio y tenemos los puntos de Constructores, por lo que no es tan malo. Luchamos mucho el último día y lo hicimos bien, pero esperaba un poco más. Aún así, estoy feliz de terminar y hacerlo en tercer lugar”.

“Podría haber sido un poco mejor, pero también un poco peor. En Australia estarán Thierry [Neuville] y Nicolas [Gilsoul] y Dani [Sordo] y Carlos [del Barrio], además de Andreas [Mikkelsen] y Anders [Jaeger] para disputar el rally. Creo que debemos apoyar al equipo que nos ha ayudado durante la temporada, porque el objetivo es el campeonato de Constructores”.

El 2011 es va estrenar amb un Ford Fiesta RS WRC en el mundial de la mà d’M-Sport, equip i marca a la qual va estar lligat durant diverses temporades fins que l'any passat signava per Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, acabant amb el Yaris WRC com a tercer classificat en el mundial de Pilots per, ja en l'actual campanya, aconseguir el títol amb 6 victòries en les 13 proves celebrades fins al moment.

Si Dani Sordo hagués acabat segon, aleshores el Power Stage hagués estat la solució. Però, al final, és el que és. Vam fer el màxim que vam poder i hem gaudit durant tot el ral·li amb una sensació genial del cotxe. Esperem amb ànsia la pròxima prova i poder lluitar pel títol de Constructors, perquè ara l'objectiu és centrar-se en guanyar-lo a Austràlia”.

“Des del dijous, cada persona que em trobava em preguntava per la pressió que tenia, què pensava i com estava de cara al campionat. No és fàcil administrar-lo en aquesta situació. Diria que en la meva vida he tingut moments difícils, per la qual cosa sens dubte això m'ha ajudat a afrontar-ho en aquesta mena de situacions. Malgrat tot, això era una cosa nova per mi. Al principi no sabia com em comportaria i com el gestionaria. No hi havia altra opció que relaxar-me i mirar de córrer sense assumir riscos. Vaig parlar anit amb Markko Märtin i el seu consell va ser que assegurés els punts i no pressionés, de manera que no deu estar massa content amb el que vaig fer en el Power Stage. Sabia que tenia dues opcions, pilotar i esperar que Thierry Neuville no agafés massa punts, la qual cosa sabia que no anava a succeir, o atacar i sumar el màxim de punts per intentar decidir el campionat abans d'Austràlia”.

“Perdre el segon lloc per 4 dècimes de segon no és bo. Ens esforcem molt i gaudim, pensàvem que havíem atacat molt, però no va ser suficient. Estem en el podi i tenim els punts de Constructors, i això no és tan dolent. Vam lluitar molt l'últim dia i ho vam fer bé, però esperava una mica més. Tot i així, estic feliç d'acabar i fer-ho en tercer lloc”.

A Austràlia hi seran Thierry Neuville i Nicolas Gilsoul, i Dani Sordo i Carlos del Barrio, a més d’Andreas Mikkelsen i Anders Jaeger per disputar el ral·li. Crec que hem de donar suport a l'equip que ens ha ajudat durant la temporada, perquè l'objectiu és el campionat de Constructors”.

55 RallyRACC: The protagonists of the podium have their say

The new FIA World Rally Champion Ott Tänak (Kärla, Estonia, 15/10/1987), started to race before becoming of age. He started in 2001, to be crowned national rally champion in Estonia in 2008. That very year, he made his World Rally Championship debut in a Subaru Impreza STi N14 and fought his way into the Pirelli Star Driver initiative, a promotional FIA series in which all drivers race in identical Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X cars. He participated in several of the 2010 events.

M-Sport signed the Estonian in 2011, and he raced the World Rally Championship in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC and was linked to the team and to the make for a number of years. For the 2018 season, Tänak signed a deal with Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and placed the Yaris WRC third overall in the drivers’ championship. In the 2018-19 season, he clinched the title with 6 wins out of 13 events held so far.

Ott Tänak has raced in 105 WRC rally events, pocketing 12 wins, always with co-driver Martin Järveoja: 2 of them were for Ford in 2017, and the rest for Toyota in 2018 and 2019. His maiden world championship victory was in Sardinia.

“First of all I would like to say congratulations to our two new World Champions. Obviously, we have been fighting all year and Ott and Martin have been very strong, so congratulations to them on their first title. It will not be so easy for them next year… I was looking more in my mirrors at the guys behind. We needed the times to go our way to remain in the fight. If Dani had come second, then the Power Stage would have been the decision. But, at the end, it is what it is. We did the maximum we could. We enjoyed the weekend and the feeling in the car was great. We look forward to the upcoming event and the fight for the Manufacturers’ Championship. Now the goal is to win that championship in Australia”.

“Since Thursday, every second person is asking about the pressure and how your head is and how the championship is. It is not easy to manage because of this. I would say that in my life, I have had many difficult problems, so for sure, it helps to cope with this kind of situations. Still, this pressure was something new. At the beginning, I did not know how I would perform and how I would manage the pressure like this. I had no other choice other than to relax and try to get the feeling without taking any risks. I spoke with Markko Märtin last night, and his advice was to take all the points and not to push and he obviously was not happy with the Power Stage. Before the Power Stage, I had two options. Basically, to drive and hope that Thierry [Neuville] would not take too many points -and I knew this was not going to happen-, or to push myself and try and decide the championship before Australia”.

“Missing on second place by four-tenths is not nice. We pushed hard and enjoyed. We thought we had pushed hard in the last stage, but it was not enough. But we are on the podium and we have points for the Manufacturers’, so it is not so bad. We fought very hard in the morning and we did okay. We did some nice stages. I was hoping to do a bit more, but I am happy to be on the stage and on the podium”.

“This weekend could have been a little better, but it could also have been a little worse. In Australia, we’ll have Thierry [Neuville] and Nicolas [Gilsoul] and Dani [Sordo] and Carlos [del Barrio], and we have Andreas [Mikkelsen] and Anders [Jaeger] down to do the rally. I firmly believe that we should support the team that has supported us all season. The goal is the Manufacturers’ Championship”.
